The Pecking Order

We assume hierarchy needs an audience. Out here the pecking order runs perfectly well without any witnesses. Something is in charge. Probably several somethings, depending on the time of day or the season And the system works because nobody’s performing for approval and nobody’s checking whether the rules are fair. This clearing doesn’t care about accountability. It sorts itself out. Who eats whom, who gets the light, who makes it through winter. It will be cruel, but it’s never sentimental. Nothing is owed anything and nothing expects to be. It’s refreshing, the idea of a world that just gets on with it.
